Government, through the 2007science preference policy, directed that science students would receive 75% of the Government scholarships to public universities and tertiary institutions.Public universities have made special provision to encourage women in science through internal quota policies. Makerere University Council in August 2019 approved an affirmative action policy ring-fencing 40% of vacancies in all STEM disciplines for women.
