There is renewed focus on the role of higher education in catalysing the development of African economies to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals within the broader visionary context of the Africa Union’s Agenda 2063, The “Africa We Want”. The Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy for Africa (STISA-2024) is a medium term framework for implementing Agenda 2063 and the Science Agenda for Agriculture articulates the strategies required to build and strengthen the capacities required to put science, technology and innovations to work for agriculture in Africa.

Makerere University Bachelor of Commerce Students beat all odds to emerge as second runners up in the inaugural Inter-University Insurance Quiz held on Friday 20th October 2017 at the Imperial Royale Hotel, Kampala. The students who only learned of the competition on the eve of the event through their mentor Dr. Godfrey Akileng-Head, Department of Accounting, College of Business and Management Sciences (CoBAMS), however took the last minute preparations to heart and emerged triumphant.

Financial forecasts at the 6th Makerere University Retirement Benefits Scheme (MURBS) Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in October 2016 were noncommittal especially in the wake of the February 2016 presidential election in Uganda and the then upcoming Kenyan General Election in August 2017. Trustees in their remarks then braced attendees for the worst performance, especially since the East African equity markets, which hold a substantial amount of the Scheme’s investments, are dominated by foreign players.

A third planning meeting was held for the technical task team for the Committee of 10 Heads of State in Lilongwe, Malawi.  The aim of the meeting is to bring together the core technical team and stakeholders to discuss the preparedness for the Committee of 10 meeting as well as to agree on the key documents to be presented. Further, case studies from around Africa on the status of higher education, science and technology were reviewed to refine the current levers of change for the Committee of 10.

Makerere University has successfully secured a grant worth USD12 million from World Bank to run two African Centres of Excellence. Estimated to cost USD 6million each, the Africa Centre of Excellence in Material Product Development and Nanotechnology (MAPRONANO) and Makerere University Regional Centre for Crop Improvement (MaRCCI) will be geared towards supporting capacity building and research development at this great institution.

The Mastercard Foundation has partnered with the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM), a network of 66 universities in 26 African countries, with the Secretariat located at Makerere University Main Campus. The partnership focuses on ‘Transforming African Agricultural Universities to meaningfully contribute to Africa’s growth and development’.

It is great that RUFORUM was able to host a pre-event for Principals and Deans to receive leadership and management training facilitated by the Partnership for African Social and Government Research (PASGR) during the 13th Annual General Meeting in Malawi. PASGR’s main aim is to increase capacity of academic institutions and researchers to contribute research that informs social policy and governance through collaborative higher education programs. The meeting took the form of experiential learning with a former Dean who is now a Vice- Chancellor sharing his experience.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Regional Universities Forum for Capacities Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM) on the 26th October, 2017 signed a Memorandum of Understanding and committed to work together to strengthen  the capacities of RUFORUM member universities to better contribute to food and nutrition security, increase sustainability of agricultural and food systems, reduce rural poverty and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Africa.

Hosted by the Dubai Design District (d3), the Global Grad Show is a not for profit initiative curated by renowned author and designer, Brendan McGetrick. McGetrick curated 200 innovative from over 470 global entries based on his personal interpretation of design that emphasises four categories: innovation that transcends technology and exists independent of wealth; equality without hierarchy amongst universities, regions and designers; universal design opens to all types of projects; and impact on the world at large through solutions to some of the world’s most pressing problems.

On Saturday 4th November 2017, MasterCard Scholars at Makerere University together with the residents of Giza Giza in Mbuya, community leaders and in collaboration with the Kampala Capital City Authority participated in sanitation activities that involved cleaning the slum, collecting garbage, and sensitizing the community on sanitation and personal hygiene.
