The MasterCard Foundation Scholars at Makerere University held their Annual Service Day on Saturday 4th November 2017 under the theme “Social Inclusion and Collective Action.”

The Scholars reached out to two (2) communities namely in St Charles Lwanga Primary School Bukerere in  Mukono Municipality  and  Giza Giza in Mbuya, Kampala District.

The atmosphere was literally thick with words as literature teachers, students and enthusiasts from all walks of life gathered on Thursday 9th November 2017 in the Quality Assurance Directorate’s Telepresence Centre, Makerere University to launch Word Craft. Word Craft is a two hour documentary directed by Prof. Sr. Dominic Dipio, Department of Literature, College of Humanities and Social Science (CHUSS) focusing on the Word as what defines and shapes human relationship in its everyday and specialised usages.

The Principal, College of Natural Sciences (CoNAS),   Professor J.Y.T. Mugisha together with other members of the college management hosted a delegation from Wollega University, Ethiopia on Monday 13th November led by Dr. Tifsehit Solomon (Vice President – Community Engagement and University Industry Partnership). The delegation from Wollega University visited CoNAS to share experiences of teaching and learning in the natural sciences. The meeting also explored possibilities of collaborating in research activities, capacity building, staff and students exchanges.

The Directorate of Research and Graduate Training (DRGT) is hosting the fourth Joint Doctoral School between African Doctoral Academy (ADA) Stellenbosch and Makerere University.

The two-week training commenced on 6th November 2017 at Conference Hall, Level 4 in Senate Building, Makerere University. The fourth Doctoral School in the series is majoring Philosophy of Methods and the Department of Philosophy in conjunction with Development Studies, Makerere University is conducting the training.

Makerere University is collaborating on a project called Building capacity for REDD+ in East Africa for improved ecosystem health and for sustainable livelihoods in Eastern Africa (REDD-EA).  REDD+ is a policy framework aimed at mitigating climate change. The project supports 14 PhD students and 27 Masters students and several senior researchers at both Makerere University and at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM).

Prof. Gilbert Maiga and Dr. Florence Kivunike (Head of ICT Support Services) to appraise the donation of 200 thin client computers, 6 servers and 4 switches to setup a new computer laboratory at the College.

On Friday 17th November, 2017, a delegation from China led by Professor Li Ming - Director, International Centre for Higher Education, Innovation under the auspices of UNESCO (UNESCO-ICHEI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding between Makerere University and UNESCO-ICHEI. In the presence of several members of Makerere University Management, the Vice Chancellor Professor Barnabas Nawangwe signed on behalf of Makerere University. The MoU signing ceremony took place in the Council Room.

The Director General of the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD), Jon Lomøy has applauded Makerere University for maintaining strong ancient ties with the Royal Government of Norway as well as the Norwegian institutions through the Norwegian support, partnerships, research, innovations, knowledge sharing, and student-staff exchange. This was during his visit to the great institution on 21st November 2017.

The Makerere Doctoral Convention (Pf@Mak) 2017 has commenced today, 23rd November 2017. In 2010 the University initiated the PhD Forum at Makerere University (PF@Mak), a Fellowship that brings together PhD students. Through the Forum, the University is able to provide a favourable environment for doctoral mentorship, training and research through peer networking and academic collaborations.
