I wish to thank the Uganda Bankers’ Association (UBA) and the Deposit Protection Fund (DPF) for the generous donation of UGX 200M towards the Rapid Test Kits project spearheaded by Dr. Misaki Wayengera of the College of Health Sciences (CHS), Makerere University. I equally thank the Honourable Minister of Health, Dr. Ruth Aceng and the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Diana Atwine, for the great work.

Mak Responds to COVID-19: Call For Applications
Uganda is taking the precautionary approach while responding to the novel COVID-19 pandemic. This means extensive social distancing, locking of public spaces and public transport and allowing only essential services to continue. These measures are likely to have unprecedented impact on the livelihood of Ugandans. There is an urgent need for a domestic understanding of how this pandemic plays out in Uganda’s unique settings.

Government, through the 2007science preference policy, directed that science students would receive 75% of the Government scholarships to public universities and tertiary institutions.Public universities have made special provision to encourage women in science through internal quota policies. Makerere University Council in August 2019 approved an affirmative action policy ring-fencing 40% of vacancies in all STEM disciplines for women.

The Marker-Assisted Breeding (MAB) Chicken team consists of Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM, Mozambique), in partnership with Gulu University (GU), Makerere University (MAK, Uganda), Women of Uganda Network (WOUGNET), and International Rural Poultry Centre (IRPC, Mozambique). Call for Applications: MISR Interdisciplinary MPhil/PhD Programme 2021
The Makerere Institute of Social Research launched its Interdisciplinary PhD in Social Studies in January 2012. The five-year programme entails two years of coursework and three years of dissertation research and writing. Four broad themes define the program's intellectual focus: Political Studies, Political Economy, Historical Studies, and Literary and Cultural Studies. Students specialize in one field, but take classes across all four.
Mak's Findings: Index Patients Diagnosed and Treated for COVID-19 in Uganda
On Tuesday May 26, 2020, Makerere University (Mak) Management converged to share findings from the study whose aim of was “to detail characteristics and treatment outcomes of the Coronavirus (COVID 19) pandemic patients in Uganda”. Coronavirus being a novel and rapidly changing pandemic, it was essential that early lessons are obtained and synthesised. These lessons directly feed into the clinical care guidelines and eventually contribute to the country’s interventions.

Nations and nationals are calling for action and the requisite resources must be made available/ mobilised as well as the indicators for measuring success agreed on.
Tribute To Our Gallant Professors
As a small boy growing up in Sibarara, one of the most remote villages in Uganda, I often had the privilege to read the Uganda Argus, the equivalent of the New Vision today, courtesy of my late father, who was at that time a head teacher of the local primary school and hence one of the most respected people in the county. In the Uganda Argus, I often read about Makerere University and the prominent professors at that time, including Prof. Langlands, Prof. Lule, Prof. Mazrui and others.
